” Still have trouble with adding the top coat… I think I wait too long to add color to the core structure, which looks total finished, just no color…”

When you make the core for a sculpture, don’t waste time adding detailing. You are going to cover up any details with the topcoat anyway. In these pictures the black core is for a sheep, and the white core is for a dog. Notice that there’s not much difference! You will make the details with whatever color wool that you add as the finishing layer or topcoat.  I hope that this answers your question.
